National Preparedness Month: OID Shares Essential Steps To Get Ready
OKLAHOMA CITY – September is National Preparedness Month, an initiative led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to encourage Americans to prepare for disasters and emergencies. The Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) is joining the effort by encouraging Oklahomans to Get Ready.
Follow these steps to build your emergency plan:
- Create an emergency communication plan. List emergency contacts, key service providers and at least one out-of-state contact. Make copies for each household member.
- Build an emergency kit. Prepare a go-bag with nonperishable food, water, medications, important documents and a change of clothes. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) offers a suggested list of items for your go-bag.
- Make an evacuation and shelter plan. Know multiple exit routes and safe locations. Decide where your household will meet and identify nearby shelters or trusted places to stay.
- Address unique needs. Include medical equipment, medications, pet supplies or other items specific to your household.
- Stay informed. Enable emergency alerts on your phone and monitor weather updates through radio, television or smartphone apps.
- Practice and review your plan. Hold drills and update your plan regularly to keep it current.
